I just wandered into Old Hillsbrad the other day and watched the meeting of the Scarlet Crsuade in its foundings.
For those who have not seen it, it is essentially them discussing the fall of Northrend to some undead forces, and then the unveiling of a violet crystal that Commander Mograine discovered off the corpse of an orc at Blackrock Spire during the orc-human wars. While the crystal was darkened and evil, concentrated efforts of the Light of the members of the Crusade managed to purify it of its evil, revealing its true self--a deep red crystal, with runic markings similar to that commonly seen on Naaru crystalline structures (Click here to see image).
Following this transformation, Commander Mograine remarks to have felt an immense inner flow of Light and healing from the crystal upon touching it.
This crystal would later go on to being used in the construction of the legendary Ashbringer.
Now, it is known that the orcs fell into possession of at least two Ata'mal Crystals. the Heart of Fury (red), and the Brilliant Fire (yellow).
The Heart of Fury, a deep red in colour, was known to possess the following attributes:
"The Heart of Fury roused the emotions, putting the bearer in the mood for combat. This crystal made the beholder stronger and faster, and if a leader of a raid held the gem, the entire raid would be affected to a degree. The bearer of the gem would always strike true when holding it. This fragment reacted to anger, pulsing when someone in the immediate vicinity expressed anger."
Gul'dan gifted this crystal to the leaders of his orc raid parties (in cycle), to bolster their abilities.
It is extremely likely, if not guaranteed, that the red crystal discovered by Mograine, and used in the creation of the Ashbringer, was the Heart of Fury. This is due to the fact that A) The devs want to bridge as much content as possible with the Draenei/Naaru and older content, so this provides the perfect link, B) Any other crystal given to the orc leaders would be a senseless plot hole. The Ata'mal crystals are the only lore-direct crystals known to have been used by the Old Horde extensively. C) The charismatic properties of the Heart of Fury match the Scarlet Crusade nearly 100% perfectly:
What this means:
Clear, direct indication of why, exactly, the Crusade is as zealous and fiery as it is. The crystal's powers would be bestown upon all in the Crusade, making them incredibly combatant and steadfast in their desires. The strength of the Ashbringer, known to destroy the undead with ease even before the blade was unsheathed, is also a testament to the Holy Light of the Heart of Fury. In addition, its quality to make the bearer of it always strike true would indicate just why Commander Mograine was capable of felling thousands of undead without so much as a scratch, and that only the treachery of his son could defeat him.
This would also explain why the Crusade went corrupt (possibly. It could just be that Balnazzar corrupted them). For when Ashbringer was corrupted, and the Ata'mal crystal within it equally corrupted, the entire Scarlet Crusade would fall to that same corruption. Instead of using their fury for good, it was instead taken to such lengths as to allow no quarter to anyone, zealousness to the point of blindness. This isn't necessarily true, since the blade was no longer in the possession of the Crusade after Mograine's death. So the Crusade as it is today may be purely Balnazzar's work and have nothing to do with the corrupted Heart of Fury.
This is a very interesting link, and will likely be revealed in time as the devs release ever more on the Ashbringer storyline.
